Life in Serbia as a Canadian expat in 2027: what to know first

Canadians can spend up to 90 days in any 180 in Serbia without a visa; living there longer needs a temporary residence permit, which the Ministry of Interior decides. Day-to-day costs are lower than in most Canadian cities: the average net salary in Serbia was about 1,000 euros a month in August 2026 (Statistical Office). Is English widely spoken in Serbia?
In the cities, mostly yes. Serbia ranked 25th in the world in the EF English Proficiency Index 2025, with a score of 578. English is common in city shops and offices.
Official life is in Serbian. Contracts, permits and government forms are in Serbian, often in Cyrillic.
How long can a Canadian stay in Serbia?
Canadian citizens can stay in Serbia for up to 90 days in any 180 without a visa (Ministry of Foreign Affairs). Your address must be registered with the police within 24 hours of arrival (Law on Foreigners).
To stay longer, you need a temporary residence permit. The Ministry of Interior (MUP) decides it. A permit can last up to three years, and since 1 February 2024 one single permit covers residence and work. Common grounds are work, a company, property or family.

What happens to health cover when you leave Canada?
Each province sets its own rules. Ontario is an example (Ontario Ministry of Health, January 2026):
- Away more than seven months, you keep OHIP up to two years only if Ontario stays your main home.
- You also need 153 days in Ontario in each of the two years before you leave.
- Ontario advises buying private health insurance before you go.

Can Canadians drive in Serbia on a Canadian licence?
Yes, for a time. On a temporary stay, a foreigner can drive in Serbia on a valid foreign or international licence (Ministry of Foreign Affairs).
A permanent resident can drive on a foreign licence for up to six months from entry. After that, the licence must be exchanged or a Serbian licence obtained. You cannot use two licences from two countries at the same time.

The residence file starts late and the visa-free time ends first.

Who decides residence, licences and tax?
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs sets visa rules. The Ministry of Interior (MUP) decides residence permits, permanent residence and driving licences. The Tax Administration decides tax in Serbia; in Canada, the CRA and your province decide.
