Foreign car import & registration
Import & Register a Foreign Car in Serbia — Fully Managed
Importing a foreign vehicle into Serbia involves customs clearance, payment of import duties and VAT, homologation (a technical compliance process), and Serbian registration. The process takes 2–6 weeks depending on the vehicle's origin and specification. Relocation Serbia manages the complete process under Power of Attorney — you do not visit customs offices, traffic authorities, or government facilities. Two common approaches: shipping your existing vehicle, or purchasing a car in Germany and importing it.
- Full process managed — customs, homologation, registration, plates
- Power of Attorney — you never visit customs or government offices
- Vehicle eligibility assessed before any costs are committed
- Germany purchase + Serbia import — coordinated end to end
- Clear cost estimate provided before you commit to anything

Two options
Shipping your vehicle or buying in Germany — which is right for you?

- Serbian customs clearance and import declaration
- Import duties and VAT calculation and payment
- Homologation and technical inspection
- Full Serbian registration and plates
- Power of Attorney preparation — we sign on your behalf

Buy a Car in Germany & Import to Serbia
Germany has the largest, most transparent used car market in Europe — and German-specification vehicles are ideally suited for Serbian import due to their Euro emissions compliance. Many clients find they can acquire a significantly better vehicle in Germany than in Serbia for the equivalent budget.
- Pre-purchase compliance check — we confirm the vehicle qualifies before you buy
- Purchase coordination (we can assist in locating the right vehicle)
- Export documentation from Germany
- Transport to Serbia — road or transporter
- Serbian customs clearance and import declaration
- Import duties and VAT calculation and payment
- Homologation, technical inspection, and Serbian registration

Every step managed
What Relocation Serbia handles — end to end
____
From the moment you decide to import a vehicle to the day you receive Serbian plates, here is every step we own on your behalf.
Eligibility Assessment
Before any costs are incurred, we assess the vehicle's age, engine spec, emissions standard, and country of origin. Not all vehicles qualify — and some cost more to import than they're worth. We tell you this upfront.
Cost Estimate
We provide a clear itemised cost estimate — import duties, VAT, homologation fees, registration costs — before you commit to anything. No surprises halfway through the process.
Shipping & Transport
For vehicles coming from outside Serbia, we coordinate transport — whether container shipping from overseas or road transport from Germany or other EU countries.
Customs Clearance
We prepare and submit the Serbian customs import declaration, calculate and pay applicable duties and VAT, and manage all communication with Serbian customs authorities under Power of Attorney.
Homologation & Inspection
We arrange and attend all homologation assessments and mandatory technical inspections. Where modifications are required to meet Serbian standards, we coordinate these through our partner network.
Registration & Plates
The vehicle is registered in your name at the Serbian traffic authority. You receive the Serbian registration document (saobraćajna dozvola) and Serbian plates — the car is legal on Serbian roads.
Understanding the process
What is homologation — and why does it matter?
Homologation is the step most clients don't know about until it causes a delay or unexpected cost. Understanding it upfront prevents surprises.
What homologation is
Homologation (homologacija in Serbian) is a technical compliance assessment confirming that an imported vehicle meets Serbian road safety, technical, and emissions standards before it can be registered.
It is required for all imported vehicles that were not originally sold and registered on the Serbian market. Even vehicles from other EU countries — which are already compliant with EU standards — must pass Serbian homologation before registration.
- Technical inspection of vehicle structure and safety systems
- Emissions compliance check — Euro 4 minimum for most categories
- Lighting, braking, and safety equipment verification
- VIN and documentation verification against physical vehicle
- Possible modifications required for non-EU specification vehicles

Before you commit
What vehicles import well — and what doesn't
____
Not every vehicle is worth importing into Serbia. We assess eligibility before you spend a single euro on logistics or purchase. Here is the general picture.
Vehicles that typically import well
- EU-specification vehicles (German, Austrian, French, Italian, etc.)
- Euro 4, 5, or 6 emissions rating — the cleaner the better
- Left-hand drive configuration (Serbia drives on the right)
- Vehicles with clear title — no outstanding finance or disputes
- Manufactured after approximately 2005 for most categories
- Diesel and petrol — no special EV infrastructure complications
- Vehicles already registered in EU countries
Even for vehicles that qualify, importing only makes financial sense if the total import cost (duties, VAT, homologation, transport) is justified by the vehicle's value or specific characteristics. We run this calculation for you.
Vehicles that commonly cause problems
- Right-hand drive vehicles — significant restrictions apply
- North American specification — modifications typically required
- Very old vehicles or pre-Euro 4 emissions — may not qualify
- Vehicles with outstanding finance or legal encumbrances
- Salvage title or rebuilt vehicles
- Non-standard or heavily modified vehicles
- Vehicles where total import cost exceeds the vehicle's value
Importing a vehicle incorrectly — or proceeding without proper eligibility assessment — can result in the vehicle being impounded, refused registration, or require expensive modifications. We eliminate this risk through a pre-commitment assessment.
What it costs
Import cost components — what you pay
____
The total cost of importing a vehicle into Serbia depends on the vehicle's customs value, age, engine size, and country of origin. Here are the components that make up the total.
Primary tax
Customs Import Duty
The duty rate depends on the vehicle's country of origin and the applicable trade agreement. EU-origin vehicles generally benefit from preferential rates. The duty is calculated on the customs value of the vehicle.
Value added tax
VAT on Import
VAT at 20% is applied to the customs value plus import duty. This is the largest single import cost component for most vehicles and is non-recoverable for private individuals (recoverable for VAT-registered companies).
Compliance
Homologation Fees
The homologation assessment, technical inspection, and any required certification are subject to fees that vary based on the vehicle type and complexity of compliance. We include these in the upfront estimate.
Administration
Registration & Transport
Serbian registration fees are relatively modest fixed amounts. Transport costs from Germany or other European countries vary by distance and method — these are quoted separately based on your specific vehicle and origin.
Step by step
The full import and registration process
Five stages from consultation to Serbian plates — managed entirely by Relocation Serbia under Power of Attorney.
Vehicle consultation & eligibility assessment
We review the vehicle's make, model, year, specification, and country of origin. We confirm whether the vehicle qualifies for Serbian import, flag any likely complications, and provide a clear cost estimate — including duties, VAT, homologation, transport, and our service fee. No costs are incurred at this stage.
If the vehicle doesn't make financial sense to import, we tell you before you spend anything. This consultation is the most important step.
Documentation & transport coordination
We prepare the Power of Attorney (authorising us to act on your behalf throughout the process), coordinate export documentation from the vehicle's current country of registration, and arrange transport to Serbia — by road transporter for European vehicles or container shipping for intercontinental imports.
For Germany purchases, we can assist in locating a compliant vehicle through our network before the documentation stage begins.
Serbian customs clearance
The vehicle arrives in Serbia and we manage the full customs import process — submitting the import declaration, providing all required documentation to Serbian customs, and arranging payment of applicable import duties and VAT. You are not present at customs.
All communication with Serbian customs authorities is handled by us under Power of Attorney. You receive a report of all duties and taxes paid.
Homologation & technical inspection
We arrange and manage the homologation assessment and mandatory technical inspection (tehnički pregled). If any modifications are required to meet Serbian standards, we coordinate these through our technical partner network before re-inspection. Most EU-specification vehicles pass without modification.
Homologation timelines can vary — we track progress and notify you immediately of any issues or requirements for additional steps.
Serbian registration & plates
The vehicle is registered in your name at the Serbian traffic authority (MUP). We manage the registration application, payment of registration fees, and collection of the Serbian vehicle registration document (saobraćajna dozvola) and Serbian number plates. The vehicle is now fully legal on Serbian roads.
You receive the vehicle registration document, plates, and a complete file of all import documentation for your records.
Questions
Car import FAQ
The questions we answer on almost every vehicle import consultation.
Can foreigners register a car in Serbia?
Yes, provided they hold valid Serbian temporary or permanent residency. Residency is a legal prerequisite for vehicle registration in Serbia — you cannot register a car on a tourist entry or visa-free stay alone. If you are relocating to Serbia and need both residency and vehicle registration, Relocation Serbia coordinates both processes — often in parallel to minimise total time.
What is homologation and is it always required?
Homologation is a technical compliance assessment confirming a vehicle meets Serbian road safety and emissions standards. It is required for all vehicles imported from outside Serbia — including EU-origin vehicles. For modern EU-specification vehicles, homologation is typically straightforward and passes without modification. For US, Canadian, or older specifications, additional steps may be required. We assess what homologation will involve for your specific vehicle before the import begins.
Is it cheaper to buy a car in Germany and import it?
Often yes — particularly for newer, well-maintained vehicles in the €10,000–€30,000 range. Germany's used car market is the largest and most transparent in Europe, and German-specification vehicles are well-suited for Serbian import. The cost advantage depends on the specific vehicle and total import costs (duties, VAT, transport, homologation). We run this calculation specifically for the vehicle you're considering — before you commit to any purchase.
Can I drive on foreign plates in Serbia long-term?
No. Serbian law limits driving on foreign plates to the duration of your authorised stay without residency. Once you have Serbian residency, you are legally required to register the vehicle in Serbia within a defined period. Driving on foreign plates as a Serbian resident risks fines, vehicle seizure, and complications with your residency status. We ensure compliance by coordinating vehicle registration alongside the residency process.
Do I need to be present during customs clearance or registration?
No. Under the Power of Attorney we prepare, Relocation Serbia handles all customs clearance, homologation appointments, technical inspections, and registration at the traffic authority on your behalf. You do not visit customs offices, inspection stations, or government registration facilities at any point in the process. You receive the completed registration document and plates.
Can a company import a vehicle in Serbia through its DOO?
Yes. Vehicles can be imported and registered in the name of a Serbian DOO (limited liability company). Corporate imports follow slightly different customs procedures than personal imports, and the VAT on import is generally recoverable for VAT-registered companies. Relocation Serbia coordinates corporate vehicle imports for companies operating in Serbia through our company formation and corporate services team.
