What can end your Serbian permanent residence in 2026
Short answer
Serbian permanent residence ends on five grounds set by Article 72 of the Law on Foreigners: a serious threat to public order or security, an expulsion or deportation measure, false information in your file, living abroad for more than one year without a break, or giving it up. For most people the real risk is the one-year absence rule, not crime. The Ministry of Interior (MUP) decides whether the right has ended.

What is permanent residence in Serbia?
Permanent residence (stalno nastanjenje) lets a foreigner live in Serbia with no set end date. Most people qualify after three years of continuous temporary residence.
The law sets no fixed day count for the decision. The Ministry of Interior sets the timing and we don’t promise a date. It is also the base for citizenship: see Serbian citizenship pathways.
Can you lose permanent residence in Serbia?
Yes. The law lists five grounds:
Security. A real and serious threat to public order or security.
Removal. An expulsion or deportation order.
False information. A false identity or hidden facts in your file.
Absence. Moving away, or over one year abroad without a break.
Waiver. Giving up the right yourself.
How long can you live abroad with Serbian permanent residence?
Up to one year without a break. More than a year abroad continuously is a ground to end it. Short trips are fine; one long stay away is not.

The law’s examples: a final prison sentence of over one year, or sentences adding up to three years within five years. The Ministry must also weigh your years in Serbia, family and ties.
Can false information cancel permanent residence years later?

Does the foreigner ID card expire?
The card does; the right does not. The adult foreigner ID card is valid for five years and can be renewed. An expired card causes problems at banks and borders.

Who decides if permanent residence ends?
The Ministry of Interior (MUP) decides, through the local police administration. It can set up to 30 days to leave, and its decision can be appealed.
